What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is an injectable medicine that is used along with diet and exercise.
Key Considerations
- Administration: Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection administered under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm using a pre-filled pen.
- Common Side Effects: The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, and often include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, and constipation. These effects are generally mild to moderate and tend to occur more frequently when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
- Serious Side Effects and Warnings: Mounjaro has a boxed warning (the FDA’s most serious warning) due to the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors found in animal studies. It is not known if it causes these tumors in humans. Other potential serious side effects include pancreatitis, severe allergic reactions, kidney injury, and gallbladder problems.
- Contraindications: You should not take Mounjaro if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), are pregnant, or are allergic to tirzepatide.
